Leptospirosis, Silent but a Deadly Disease!

 

These past few weeks Metro Manila and some parts of the Philippines have been suffering from floods caused by Typhoon Pedring and Quiel. Days of heavy rainfall brought unending sufferings to people who were extremely affected by flood. Hence, an increase on the number of leptospirosis cases. According to the Department of Health (DOH) this years' recorded cases of Leptospirosis from January up to September 2011 has gone almost 391 cases with 31 deaths. Most of the victims were ages 15-30 years old.

Some tips on how to prevent Leptospirosis:

 
             FLood water or potentially contaminated water must be avoided.
Proper gEar or protection like boots and gloves should be used.
         TraPs or rat poison are some effective ways to maintain cleanliness inside the house.
      TO wash your body with soap and water if wading in the flood is unavoidable.

 
Always be reminded that leptospirosis is a life-threatening disease, so be wary of the signs and symptoms and always remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of CURE.
